TV Series: A List of Ideas

Understandably, there are diverse types of animated television series; some are short-term, and some are long-term, some are good and some a bad.
While I do fully take this into account, I also needed to be cautious of the time frame of the series and number of characters involved, as an excessive number of characters can make any series difficult to work with. That being said, followed by the presentation and much reflection, I had to come up with at least three ideas for the TV series.

We Be Brothers

The story revolves around three childhood friends who unexpectedly end up in the same university, and in the same flat. Now bearing the name of Christ, they now have to face college life while still standing for the faith.

Number of episodes: 30-60 (making it a total of 2-3 seasons)

STORY REFERENCE & CONCEPT

One of the important themes that play a prominent role in the series is friendship which is seen throughout the series between the three main characters (Oscar, Miguel and Benson). While there will be a Christian message in each episode, it also enhances the importance and value of friendship; this in reference to a passage in the Scriptures which says "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend." (Proverbs 27:17). Furthermore, one episode will show how these three became close friends from childhood.

The plotline concept is somewhat similar to the Cartoon Network series We Bare Bears, but unlike it, We Be Brothers does not contain any adult-oriented suggestive themes, as the animation is aimed at students.

BACKGROUND SETTING REFERENCE

In terms of settings, Edge Hill University is a strong reference point for the environmental setting. However, there will be some fictional buildings involved including a cafe.

Dear Ladies

A group of 8 ladies of different ethnicities all passing through all manner of trials and challenges, sharing one thing in common: the fear of God.

Number of episodes: 40 (1 season only)

STORY REFERENCE & CONCEPT

The animated series in question is targeted at the female audience (mainly teenage girls), and each episode contains a Christian message. The first 2-3 episodes introduce the main characters, and afterwards, their stories are told. Furthermore, it has come to my knowledge that feminism is running riot in society and is giving a rather negative portrayal of women and mock the Christian faith. The series seeks to challenge the negative views as well.

BACKGROUND SETTING REFERENCES

Because the eight characters are situated in diverse locations (some of them are in the same building), it's important to find a way to economize all the subplots and piece them together, considering that an excessive amount of subplots can make an episode exceedingly difficult to finish.

Emmanuel

As Christmas is in full swing, the world is in intense materialism that they have forgotten the real reason why Christmas existed. Young blogger Joel Timms sets out to remind the world of the real reason for the season.

Number of episodes: 15 (1 season only)

STORY REFERENCE & CONCEPT

Unlike the other ideas, Emmanuel is a mini-series bearing less than 20 episodes. As the story is set during the Christmas period, the account of the birth of Jesus plays a prominent role in the series as it explains why Christmas is celebrated. Being a family-friendly program, the Christian message will still be concrete but in a way that even the younger viewers can easily understand. Furthermore, other themes such as hope, faith and love play an important role in the mini-series.

BACKGROUND SETTING REFERENCE

The story is set in a rustic village which will have modernized touches in the actual animation. As the timeline is during the winter, there will be snow falling in most episodes.

I personally think that all three ideas are good; however, I'm considering working on either We Be Brothers or Emmanuel.

Waiting: Patching The Story Together

Having finished writing the script, I'm now working on the rest of the character concepts and every documentation necessary for Waiting . I will still be evaluating the script for any loose ends. SCRIPTWRITING REFLECTIONS When writing the script, I had to keep the timeframe in mind, but at the same time avoid diluting the message. After the feedbacks that I received from my lecturers, I had to be more explanatory with what is happening in each scene. For example, when writing the subplot for Samuel, it reminded me of the story of Joseph in the Bible, in the instance where Potiphar's wife was trying to rubbish him, but he refused to give in, and at some point, he had to run for his life. This served as a strong reference for Samuel's case where a group of girls were eyeing Samuel, and one of them approaches him but gets turned down. It also reminds Christians to stay away from all appearances of evil. That is one of the key scenes that I had to expand one without ...

Production Research

I found a very interesting tutorial on perspective, and I think this can be very helpful in the production as the short film has diverse angles within each location. http://www.animeoutline.com/perspective-drawing-tutorial-for-beginners/ I also did a little research on character concepts. When working on my characters for the short film, I can recall a tutorial I watched, particularly this one: Understandably, drawing/animating characters from side view can be quite tricky, particularly if you are animating lip-sync. However, remembering this tutorial has helped me to make improvements on that area when drawing my characters from that viewpoint. Additionally, seeing that character side views can come in diverse forms, I hope to experiment more on this to enhance my skills in animation.

Emmanuel: Sountrack

Undoubtedly, soundtrack plays an important in every animation be it a series, an animated film or a short film. While working on the series, I am considering adding existing songs such as Hark The Herald Angels Sing , O Come, O Come Emmanuel , and Away In A Manger since the series is set around the Christmas period. While I will also compose original soundtracks as well as the theme tune itself later in the course, I came across a very recent Christmas song from Graham Kendrick. I strongly believe that this song will fit perfectly, particularly in the last episodes of the miniseries: Furthermore, another song that will perfectly fit with certain character plotlines in the miniseries; this is from Mark Smeby:
